The State of Hawaii (Mokuʻāina or Hawaiʻi in Hawaiian) is the newest of the 50 states that make up the United States. Located north of the Pacific Ocean, its capital is Honolulu, on the island of Oahu. With a total area of 16,637 km², the territory is slightly smaller than the state of Sergipe. The population is around 1,360,301, mostly followers of Catholic Rite Christianity. The official languages are English and Hawaiian. The current currency is the US dollar.
Initially inhabited by Polynesian navigators from other islands in the Pacific between 300 AD. and 600, Hawaii is visited in 1778 by British captain James Cook, who called the group of Sandwich Islands. The origin of the name Hawaii is uncertain, as the islands may have been named after Hawaii Loa, its discoverer according to local tradition, or the name may be derived from Hawaii or Hawaiki, the traditional home of the Polynesians, “Owhyhee”. .
